Now on its 11th year, the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day is celebrated yearly on June 30 pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 9187 to strengthen the historical and cultural ties, friendship, and cooperation between the Philippines and Spain.
The celebration, which will take place in Baler, Quezon Province, commemorates the “Siege of Baler” in 1899 when President Emilio F. Aguinaldo declared that the last batch of Spanish soldiers in the church of Baler be treated as comrades in peace. This gesture put forward “the best qualities of the two nations and paved the way for the continuing mutual respect and the bond of friendship between the two countries.”
At this year’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day and Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day at the Philippine Embassy in Madrid, Spain, Senator Edgardo J. Angara who authored Republic Act No. 9187 in 2002, emphasized that “the Philippines can truly serve as Spain’s gateway to the ASEAN, the conduit between Spanish creativity and Asian dynamism.”
During the visit of Her Majesty, Queen Sofia of Spain, on July 5, 2012, she looked at the various development projects that Spain is funding in the Philippines via the Agencia Española de Cooperacion Internacional para el Desarollo. She visited the National Library, the National Museum, and the University of Santo Tomas. She expressed appreciation to the incumbent administration for the effort to reintroduce the Spanish language in the Philippine public education system.
